6 Best Eyeshadow Primer Substitutes

Eyeshadow primer provides a base for eyeshadows to grip onto. It creates a matte, oil-free surface and makes an even skin-colored canvas for eyeshadow color to “pop”.

Anything else that does these things can be used as an eyeshadow primer. Alternatives include vaseline, concealer, powder, and pencil. You can also utilize aloe vera gel or lip gloss.

If you utilize a concealer, opt for water-proof stick concealers. Avoid oily concealers. The powder makes a great alternative for primer. However, it won’t help the eyeshadow color pop.

A white eyeliner pencil is another perfect option. Just blend, then utilize eyeshadow on top. You can also utilize a pencil that’s the color of your eyeshadow to give it extra “pop”.

How to Apply Eyeshadow Primer Properly?

Eyeshadow primer helps eyeshadows stick throughout the day or night without smudging and creasing. However, if you don’t have a primer on hand, use the following tricks.

Begin with a clean slate

Oily eyelids can cause your eyeshadows to melt off of your skin. Therefore, wash your face with a good cleanser and utilize oil-free makeup remover to remove any mascara leftovers. Or shadow from the day before. Always wash your face and take off your makeup before going to sleep.

Make a base

Concealers can be utilized for more than just providing a base under the eyes. It can also offer a clean base on the eyelids. You can also try the foundation. These beauty products will brighten up your whole eye area and help your eyeshadow stick. Also, don’t forget to set with powder.

Use a brush for applying eyeshadow

I know that you don’t want to spend money on eyeshadow brushes. But they’re worth the investment. They enable you to apply the eyeshadow in thin layers.

They also allow you to slowly build-up to the preferred tone. Putting your eyeshadow with a high-quality brush will make it last longer which isn’t the case with sponge applicators.

You can also utilize your fingers. But although they seem like a great blending tool, you risk adding extra oil and breaking down the pigment of the eyeshadow.

Extra tip: Always wash your eyeshadow brushes with soap and lukewarm water and let them dry fully in between uses to stop the buildup of bacteria.
