Why do I have dry scalp?
As you probably know if you have dry scalp, the first indication of having it, is itchiness. However, itching can also be accompanied by hair loss, soreness, redness, and dandruff.
You probably wonder why do you have dry scalp. Well, according to my research, I have discovered that not drinking enough water might be the reason for having a dry scalp.
Washing your hair every day might also affect your scalp and make it dry, especially if you’re using harsh shampoo or many hair care products. But I have also discovered that medical conditions can be the reason for having a dry scalp, like psoriasis and eczema.
No matter the cause, you can always do something about it. For example, you can try to bring your scalp in order with the homemade remedies I’ll present later in this article.
But before I do that, I will present other most common reasons for dry scalp and what you can do about it. First and foremost, if your scalp is often dry, it means that it lacks moisture. And when your scalp lacks moisture, the skin becomes irritated or flakes off.
You’ve probably noticed that when you have dry skin on your hands, legs, or some other part of your body, it’s easily irritated than usual and flakes off. It’s the same with your scalp. However, let’s check some of the main reasons behind this and see how to cure it.
Dry, cold air
This is one of the main reasons why you might be having dry scalp. However, it’s nothing serious to worry about. The best way to protect it is to wear a hat when you‘re out. Or keep your scalp hydrated with haircare products that don’t contain harsh ingredients.
When you need more skin cells on your body and scalp, they usually multiple. So, when you’re older, they multiply faster and die faster. When you have dandruff, they shed faster than usual. You can use some of the home remedies I’ll present or pick the shampoo for dry scalp from my list later in this article.
The main reason for dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that turns the skin on your scalp red and flaky. You can get it on your armpits, groin, eyebrows or nose. It’s often triggered by Malassezia that lives on your scalp. Some people have it more than others and this is causing the skin cells to multiply faster than normal. Malassezia can be also caused by stress, hormones, and age.
Lack of personal hygiene
Usually, dirty hair is not a reason for dry scalp or dandruff. However, if you don’t wash it often, the oil that is secreted by your scalp, might build up and contribute to flakes.
If you can’t distinct dry scalp from dandruff, pay attention to the flakes appearance. In dry scalp, they’re small, while dandruff flakes appear much bigger and greasy. However, both conditions may result in itchiness/redness. And can make you feel uncomfortable.

How can I get rid of the dry scalp?
As I mentioned at the beginning, I will present a few home remedies that can help you with a dry scalp. If they don’t work for you, I’ve also made a list with the best shampoo that you can choose from. It all depends on how you want to handle it.
Home remedies 1: Coconut oil
I personally don’t have dry scalp but as I mentioned before, my mom and brother do. So, I’ve decided to buy coconut oil for them and make an experiment. And I’m happy to say that it worked so far. Coconut oil has been used for health benefits and skin issues, like dry scalp, for example.
It keeps your scalp hydrated and contains antibacterial and antifungal properties that reduce the risk of irritations and infections. It can also cure atopic dermatitis and it’s available for purchase online or at any grocery store nearby.
Application: Take a small amount of coconut oil and warm it up in your hands. Apply to your scalp in circular motion. You should practically massage it into your scalp and let it soak for at least 15 minutes. After, wash your hair with mild water and shampoo. If you do this one a week, it’ll help you get rid of dry scalp and improve the look of your hair.
Home remedies 2: Tea tree oil
You will notice in some of the shampoos for the dry scalp that they contain tea tree oil. According to experts, tea tree oil contains strong antibiotic, antifungal and antiseptic properties that can help with dry scalp and relieve the symptoms.
However, before you buy one of the shampoos on my list, I recommend that you try and solve your problem with essential oil. You can find the tea tree essential oil in drugstores. Or try Amazon.
Application: Mix a few drops of the essential oil with a carrier oil, like olive oil/coconut oil. I personally prefer olive oil because I know it also helps with flowering hair tips. I feel obligated to mention that taking care for your scalp is recommended not only when you’re dealing with dry scalp or other skin issues but on a regular basis.
Let’s get back to the application. After you mix the tea tree with coconut or olive oil, apply it to the scalp in circular motion. Massage it into the skin and let it soak for at least 15 minutes.
Home remedies 3: Aloe vera
Aloe vera is one of the most used home remedies for dry scalp and dry skin, in general. That is why you’ll often notice aloe vera in many different hair and skincare products.
It contains anti-inflammatory properties that help with skin irritation. I don’t have to mention that it does an excellent job at keeping the scalp moisturized and healthy. You can buy pure aloe vera gel in different stores. Or you can research it and buy it online.
Application: Apply the gel to your scalp and let it soak for at least 15 minutes. Wash it off with mild water and shampoo. It will keep your scalp well-hydrated and itch-free.
Home remedies 4: Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is beneficial for dry scalp and skin, in general. It’s an antimicrobial.
Meaning, it will destroy the fungi and bacteria responsible for the itchiness. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that will help you exfoliate the skin on your head and help you restore the normal moisture. You can purchase it online or find it in nearby stores.
Application: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water. Apply it directly to your scalp and let it soak for 5 minutes before you wash it off with mild water and shampoo.
Home remedies 5: Witch hazel
Designed for sensitive, dry skin, witch hazel is an anti-itch product. It has a history in herbal medicine and it’s great for dry scalp and inflammation that might be the reason for dry scalp. It contains astringent properties that relieve the symptoms of dry scalp. You can buy it in a liquid from stores. Or research it and purchase it in online stores.
Application: If you purchase the liquid form, mix 1 part witch hazel with 2 parts water. Or you can use carrier oil if you want. Apply it to the scalp. Massage it into the skin and wait for it to soak in for 5 minutes before you wash it off with mild water and shampoo.
Home remedies 6: Olive oil and baking soda
Baking soda contains antibacterial and antifungal properties, and olive oil is moisturizing and will restore the moisture in your skin. They’re combined together because they can help you exfoliate your scalp. They make the perfect combo for dry scalp and dandruff.
Application: Mix equal parts of olive oil and baking soda together. Apply it to your scalp and let it soak in for 5 minutes before you wash your hair with mild water and shampoo.
Home remedies 7: Yogurt and egg
Although this combination sounds like breakfast, both eggs and yogurt have their own benefits that can help you get rid of dry scalp. The eggs will protect and nourish your scalp by protecting against free radical damage at the cellular level thanks to the fat. And the yogurt is calming the scalp. However, it can also be used for skin exfoliation.
Application: Mix one egg with unflavored, plain and sugar-free yogurt. Apply it on your scalp. Massage it into your skin and let it soak for about 10 minutes before you wash it off. And make sure you wash your hair well because this combo can be hard to remove.
Home remedies 8: Mashed bananas
For those of you who don’t know the benefits of bananas on your skin and hair, know that they’re both nourishing and hydrating. Bananas make the perfect solution for a dry scalp and dandruff. They’re antimicrobial. Meaning, they can clear up your dry scalp.
Application: Blend or mash a banana with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil. I personally prefer to blend banana when making a face or hair mask but do it as you please. After, apply it and let it soak in for at least 15 minutes before you wash it off.
Home remedies 9: Avocados
Avocados have polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids that can protect and hydrate the skin. It’s also suggested that you consume avocados to prevent dry and itchy scalp, instead of just applying avocado oil to your skin. You can purchase it online. Or you can buy it from local stores. It hydrates and soothes the irritated scalp.
Application: For better results, blend avocado and mix it with avocado oil. Apply it to your scalp and let it sit at least 15 minutes before you wash it off. Add olive or carrier oil to the combination if you want. And for even better results, it’s suggested that you add bananas too. However, it’s your call. All these ingredients work great for dry scalp.
Home remedies 10: Jojoba oil
Just like olive oil and coconut oil, jojoba oil acts as an effective moisturizer for skin. It contains anti-inflammatory properties that might help you treat different skin issues. You can buy jojoba oil online. Or you can find it in a liquid form for your closest store.
Application: Add a couple of drops of jojoba oil in your shampoo and conditioner. This will turn your haircare products into regulators for hydration and prevent a dry scalp.
How to prevent dry scalp?
To help prevent dry scalp and dandruff, I will share a few simple tips you need to know.
Tip 1: Avoid conditioning treatments
If your scalp isn’t producing enough sebum (natural oil), it might be the reason why your skin is flaky and itchy. In this case, most people use conditioning treatment, such as hot oil deep conditioning treatment. If not properly removed, they can cause more damage, than good and leave you with greasy, flaky hair. Apply it twice a week for best results.
Tip 2: Switch your shampoo
If you have a dry scalp, it might be a result of shampooing too often or using shampoo with harsh ingredients. Change your shampoo in order to notice an improvement. Choose products with a gentle formula especially for dry scalp. Don’t wash it too often and with hot water. Use mild water and wash your hair every other day instead. Change routine.
Tip 3: Massage your scalp often
This will stimulate the secretion of natural oil. However, massage your scalp gently and be careful not to scratch it with your fingernails. Massage it with oil of your choosing under the shower. Check the home remedies I’ve just mentioned for an oil suggestion.
Tip 4: Add vitamin B in your diet
Most skin and hair issues are caused by nutritional deficiencies, and dry scalp isn’t an exception. Add vitamin B12 and B6 in your diet to see if you notice any improvement. Or boost your intake with vegetables, fruits, cereals, whole-grain bread, and supplements.
Tip 5: If you have sensitive skin, avoid styling your hair
I’m not suggesting that you don’t style your hair at all, but if your scalp is sensitive and dry, I suggest that you don’t do it that often. Check your washing technique as well. An incorrect washing technique combined with the wrong products might cause a dry scalp.
Tip 6: Don’t blow dry your hair when you’re not in a hurry
Blow drying your hair can cause dry scalp. Or worse the condition of your scalp if it’s already dry. So, if you’re not in a hurry avoid or limit blow drying to protect your scalp.
Tip 7: Pay attention to heat styling irons and hair care products
Make sure that your heat styling iron is away from your scalp to prevent damage and dryness. Also, look for hair care products that contain almond oil. I haven’t mentioned almond oil in my list of home remedies. However, it’s just as helpful as the other oils.
If the tips and remedies I’ve mentioned in the article don’t do much for you, feel free to purchase some of the shampoos I have listed and solve your dry scalp issue once and forever. If you find this article helpful, don’t forget to share it with your best friends.
