Why is lip primer and why do I need it?
As I just mentioned, lip primer hydrates the dry lips but also fills up the lines, so your lipstick doesn’t turn into a disaster. It helps your lipstick stick longer and looks better.
Just like face primer prepares your face for makeup, lip primer represents the perfect base for lipstick. It’s like the ideal foundation for the lips. It’s a life-changing product.
I personally think that if I give lip primer a try, it will boost my confidence and turn my lips into the most perfect lips after I apply my favorite lipstick on. I won’t have to deal with dry lips or messy lipstick anymore and my partner won’t think that I lack self-care.
What are the benefits of using a lip primer?
Lip primer has a single purpose. It’s to make our lips look perfect and provide the best base for our lipstick. But it has other benefits that I was also surprised to hear about.
It gives your lips a plumped up look
Besides hydrating and smoothing your lips, with providing the perfect nude and matte foundation, lip primer will also give your lips a plumped up look by filling up the lip lines.
Smooth lipstick application and long-lasting effect
As I said earlier, lip primer is the perfect base for lipstick. Meaning it provides smooth lipstick application and helps your lipstick stick longer, even after a few drinks. You will not have to worry about reapplying lipstick after every sip of whiskey you take no more.
Covers all the imperfections and unevenness of your lips
If your lips aren’t perfect, don’t worry because no one has perfect lips. But, lip primer can help you cover all the imperfections and achieve evenness of your lips. It’s enough to apply a small amount of lip primer and you’re ready to go. However, make sure it’s a quality lip primer because not every lip primer is the same and provides good results.
It prevents your lipstick from feathering out
I don’t know about you but this happens to me every single time I put my favorite red lipstick on. And it looks gross. I look like Joker when this happens (I adore him). And I will be so happy if the lip primer I buy today prevents this from happening ever again.
It boosts the color of your lipstick
This is one of the best things about lip liners I’ve read online. Apparently, if you apply a lip liner before you apply your favorite lipstick, it boosts the color of your lipstick. This means that your lips will look even better with your lipstick on thanks to your lip primer.
It comes in different shades
Usually, lip primers don’t have a color. Meaning, they’re nude. However, you can choose between a light and a tinted one to match your skin tone. If your skin is dark, I suggest you buy the tinted one. However, if you have bright skin, I suggest you go with the light one because applying a tinted one will look weird on you. I also found a useful advice for people who like to put their face makeup on their lips (me), don’t do it.
According to makeup experts and skin care professionals, it’s not advised you put a face makeup on your lips because you don’t know if the makeup you’re using is suitable for lip application. Usually, face makeup isn’t tested for eating. And if you put face makeup on your lips, there’s a chance you ingest it while eating/drinking. Also, it’s bad for the lips.

Most of the comments and reviews I found online were positive. All the ladies were saying that it’s one of the best beauty products they’ve ever had. MAC lip primer improves the appearance of your lipstick, adds moisture to your lips, meaning, it will keep your lips well-hydrated and soft. I believe you know everything you need to know about this product from its name only. It’s made by Golden Rose, one of my favorite beauty companies. I actually own a lot of beauty products by Golden Rose. However, I still haven’t tried their popular lip primer.
I don’t know if I should buy their lip primer or the previous one by MAC. Or who knows, maybe I’ll fall in love with the next products on the list. The Golden Rose primer seems to keep lipsticks in place. You won’t have to worry about feathering with this lip primer.

The Too Faced lip primer will make sure that your lipstick won’t fade, transfer or feather under the most challenging weather conditions.
It’s enriched with vitamin E, so it can protect your lips and cover all the imperfections. This lip primer makes sure that your lips don’t lose their natural pigment. It dries fast and provides a rich coating that makes an ideal base for your lipstick. It’s easy to apply. It’s damaging ingredients-free. Dyes-free and parabens-free. What more could you possibly ask for? Definitely a primer I would buy.

And I guess I just found one because the Mary Kay TimeWise lip primer will not only make sure that your lipstick is in place the whole time but also slow down the aging of your lips.
It contains seed oil (Hybrid Sunflower Oil), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) and Vitamin E acetate. It’s easy to use and you don’t have to reapply your lipstick after drinking or eating if you have this baby on. Apply it to the lips but also to the surrounding area to prevent feathering. You can use it together with other lip products. Definitely a must-have.

And that’s exactly why this lip lock pencil is made for. It’s suitable for any skin tone and it’s easy to use.
Just wist up the lip primer and cover your lip line to create a protective barrier that will fill in the lines around your lips and make sure they look flawless with your favorite lipstick on. Great lip primer with an easy-glide, silky smooth formula that will make sure you have flawless lips. It makes the perfect base for your favorite lipstick, lip gloss and lip liner. And it won’t just make sure your lipstick looks nice but also prevent it from feathering.
It contains sunflower seed oil for lip softening and vitamin E to keep your lips healthy and smooth at the same time. According to many reviews I’ve read online, I found out that this is one of the best pre-lipstick you can get on the market these days. You will get a lip primer that will prevent your lipstick from running and feathering.
Some use it after they apply their moisturizer and others use it after. It’s your choice to make. Either way, your lips will look better than always. Once you apply this product, you will fall in love and will never replace it with another lip primer, no matter what.
9. Colour Pop Lippie Stix (Primer)
The Color Pop Lippie Stix is one of the best lip primers on the market because it makes liquid lipsticks feel more comfortable on the lips. We’ve all experienced the stickiness a lip gloss can cause but this primer will make sure it doesn’t feel that sticky like before.
It’s easy to apply and smells delicious. You don’t have to worry about having to reapply your lipstick after eating or drinking because the Color Pop Lippie Stix has you covered. It’s definitely one of the best lip primers that you will absolutely adore. I have to say that it’s a bit more pastel than you expect it to be. However, it still looks great on the lips and gives that matte finish we all dream of. It just became my favorite on the list.
10. NYX Professional Makeup Lip Primer
Although it is last on my list of best lip primers, it’s not less good than the previous products. On the contrary, if you’re looking for a sheer nude primer that will create a smooth foundation for your lipstick, it might function even better than the others. It will prep and prime your lips for long smooth wear and keep the color from fading and feathering.
All your lip imperfections will be gone with the NYX Professional Makeup Lip Primer. Just apply on your lips before you apply your favorite gloss, lipstick or lip pencil and you’re ready to conquer the world. I would give it a try. What about you?
What’s your favorite product on the list? I have mentioned somewhere in the middle of the article, if you have brighter skin, go with some of the lighter lip primers or choose the one in the color nude. If you have darker skin, choose a tinted more pigmented one.
How to apply lip primer properly?
If it’s your first time using lip primer like me, you probably need a guide on how to apply it properly. I have you covered. I’ll present the only guide you need on how to apply a lip primer right. I combined all the useful information I found online and created it myself.
Step 1: The first step to perfect lips has nothing to do with lip primer and makeup. It has to do with exfoliation. Exfoliation is very important because it helps you get rid of flakes and prep your lips. You can exfoliate with a lip scrub you buy. Or you can make a lip scrub at home as I did. I personally use coconut oil and sugar.
However, feel free to do an independent research and look for other lip scrub recipes online. Exfoliation will smoothen your lips but you need to apply a moisturizing lip balm and leave it to soak in for a couple of minutes. And before you apply your lip balm, I have a secret to share with you.
I would feel guilty if I don’t share it. I’ve heard it from conspiracy theorists on YouTube. However, you can also research it on Google too and a bunch of articles will pop up. Allegedly, beauty companies who produce lip balms add substances that found in wool that chap your lips and make you addicted to their product. The more chapped the lips, the bigger the sales. But don’t take my word for it. Choose your lip balm carefully.
Step 2: It’s lip primer time. Use a small makeup brush to apply a small amount of the lip primer. It usually comes in a lipstick tube. However, it’s much easy to apply it with a brush. Or you can use the tip of your finger if you want for precision. Apply it like you usually apply your favorite lipstick or lipgloss. Meaning, you should cover all the surface.
Step 3: After you apply the lip primer, leave it to soak in for a few minutes before you apply lipstick. You can use a liquid lipstick or matte lipstick. It doesn’t matter as long as you apply it with a brush. It’s the best way to cover all the surface and do it properly. However, don’t use the same brush you used for the lip primer if you plan on using it in the future for applying lip primer. It can ruin the formula of the lip primer.
If you believe that doing all these isn’t necessary, hear me out. It’s not. It’s mandatory. Trust me because I deal with dry chapped lips all the time, especially during the winter.
Exfoliating, moisturizing and prepping your lips is the best way to protect your lips and make sure your lipstick sticks through the party and still look great. Now, I’m the kind of girl who wants to make her own beauty products at home. And for those of you who do the same and want to make your own lip primer at home, I’ve found the best recipe.
How to make your own lip primer at home?
Later on, I will present a list of the best lip primers I’ve found online. However, if you want to make your own lip primer at home, follow this recipe with natural ingredients.
- Rosehip oil (3.5 ml)
- Powdered mica mineral in beige ( 7 g)
- Powdered mica mineral incarnation colored (15 g)
- Beeswax beads (15 g)
Mix the rosehip oil and wax beads in a bowl. Put it on High in the microwave for half a minute. After, add both mica minerals and mix until you get a creamy smooth mixture. Put it on High in the microwave again but this time for 15 seconds. Take it and place it in a jar. Cover it and leave it in the fridge for 24 hours. Your lip primer is ready to use.
This is a recipe for making a nude colored lip primer. However, if you want to make a lip primer in different colors, feel free to buy mica minerals in different colors.
I hope you find this article helpful if you’re facing lip primers for the first time as I did. I’ve shared the best recipe for homemade lip primer if you want to make your own lip primer. I hope you find my tips useful.
Don’t forget to share with a loved one who is dealing with dry lips. Or you can surprise your mother, sister or friend with the perfect gift. Buy her the best lip primer that will give her the perfect lips for these holidays.
